Pedro Sousa e Silva has just published his PhD thesis with the title “The legal protection of design” (in Portuguese). The book approaches the legal protection of design and the applied arts, analysing the way in which national and European laws deal with industrial aesthetics and covering in a systematic fashion the several regimes involved. The appearance of a product is a decisive factor to its commercial success, being the first characteristic that potential clients will be made aware of. Therefore, a successful design tends to be copied. This is why the litigation surrounding imitation of the design of products is increasingly frequent.

In May and June Nuno Sousa e Silva has approached the complex relationship of Robots with the Law in events in Barcelos, Porto, and Lisbon. This is a hot topic, which the European Parliament considered deserving of a legislative intervention. The need to protect consumers through adequate laws, classifying robots as electronic person – which would grant them a legal status – as well as guaranteeing proper rules of liability for the use of robots were some of the tackled questions.
Pedro Sousa e Silva and Nuno Sousa e Silva taught at the I Intellectual Property post-graduate course promoted by the Porto School of Law of the Catholic University of Portugal and the Portuguese Intellectual Property Association. Pedro Sousa e Silva spoke about design rights. Nuno Sousa e Silva addressed unfair competition and trade secrets.
